Social media has changed the way we advocate for things we would like to see change, for better and for worse. As discussed in my podcast, activism is a means to drive social change in many ways, but whether it is positive or negative is up for discussion.
Social media use is constantly on the rise and to accommodate for the ever-changing ways we use online platforms it is important to educate ourselves on the risks and possibilities associated, to allow ourselves to make educated choices.
Through in-depth research, I discovered the different ways different respected authors perceive the online world and how it is used to influence our societies, which in turn, can change the way we act, the decisions we make and even political choices.
Though research of scholarly articles, e-books and even the analysis of online activism pages I formed an opinion which then allowed me to form a strategy to persuade and inform my audience of the dangers of irresponsible online activism and also the possibilities and positives associated with online activism.
Exploring concepts written by authors such as Nolan L. Cabrera and Erica L. Ciszek allowed a deeper understanding to my research, providing me with a different angle as to how to interpret data and explain my point of view on the topic of activism on social media. These authors had undertaken studies on the processes of activism and how it can and cannot be used effectively. Their work, in turn, made a useful source for my podcast and background research which formed my opinion.
Using these study’s and research journals as background information allowed a fuller engagement into the podcast with more extensive understanding and comprehension.
The process of making this podcast allowed me to understand the process of creating audio material as well as editing material. It allowed me to overcome obstacles as well as learn by doing, allowing me to create new content using iMovie and Creative Commons. These processes were new and forced me to learn new programs and licensing terms which I before was not clear on, but the overall outcome was satisfying and overall educational.
The challenge of overcoming simple obstacles such as avoiding creating a monotone throughout the podcast to interest listeners or ensuring a pause to inflict effect was a challenge although this allowed me to appreciate the real art that is radio presentation and podcast making. The process also taught me about speaking clearly and pronouncing clearly in the direction of the microphone – while ensuring there is no background noise, to avoid having to re-record parts of the material.
The task of putting this podcast together was overall rewarding and educational. Learning about the process of podcast making as well as the ups and downs of social media and activism were both beneficial and interesting.
My decisions throughout the process were persuasion and information-based, in aim to educate and hopefully somewhat influence my audience, although the outcome became more informative, referring to case studies and specific statistics to further support my opinion I overall attempted to use the method of logos when writing out my script.
The outcome of this podcast was well worth the work put into it.
Whether others agree activism can be used in both negative and positive ways in always up for discussion.
