Comparing Australian culture to any other culture allows us to better understand our peers and the people we surround ourselves daily. But what if we could understand what influences them, what has the biggest effect on their culture or what they see most in things such as advertisements?
By analysing a Japanese advertisement posted in April 2019 it was easy to highlight the importance of electronics, technology and a form of equality, important to many Japanese people and their culture.
Referring to Hofstede's six dimensions this particular advertisement showed an increasing influence of power distance indicating strong hierarchies but with the need or want to distribute power evenly. Power distance was particularly shown (at 0.55) when the screen read "the future is already here, it is just not evenly distributed." This paired with the influential music made a powerful tone that influenced viewers.
Along with power distance, the advertisement showed restraint in terms of adhering to strict social norms. This advertisement showed the difference between Australian culture and Japanese cultures as it portrayed Japan as a serious, restrictive country, somewhat different from Australian happy advertisements.
